S1854 Freezes on shut down or restart!
I had thought the freeze up on boot might be the result of an IRQ problem, so I changed the computer over from an ACPI PC to a Standard PC, and then let the computer re-recognize and assign IRQ's to all of its components. This went without a hitch, but did not resolve the problem. It can't be an overheating problem

You won't find anything in the SQL Server error log - looks like that may be the file you checked. Also - do you have a mail profile defined for Agent Mail? Try deleting it if you do.
